This article analyses Muslim consumer perceptions of halal production in non-Muslim majority countries, identifying trust in certification as the primary determinant of acceptance. Key challenges include a fragmented certification landscape with over 400 bodies applying divergent standards—particularly regarding pre-slaughter stunning—and persistent concerns over transparency and fraudulent 'halal washing'.

Consumer attitudes are not monolithic: traditionalist segments prefer certifiers enforcing stricter interpretations, while younger, integrated demographics welcome the expanding mainstream availability. The growing presence of certified products in major retail and food service outlets positively normalises Muslim identity and enhances social inclusion.

The article concludes that sustaining consumer confidence requires greater standardisation across certifiers, enhanced supply chain transparency (including technological solutions like blockchain), and genuine engagement between producers and Muslim communities to ensure halal compliance is substantive rather than merely symbolic.
